IG KANJA PRESIDES OVER SIGNING OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN UNDP AND NPS

Inspector General (IG) of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, today presided over the signing of a Letter of Agreement between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the NPS at the Service Headquarters, Jogoo House. As the United Nations' lead agency for international development, the UNDP focuses on eradicating poverty, achieving sustainable economic growth, and improving human development. Its partnership with the NPS marks a significant step towards modernizing and professionalizing policing in Kenya. The agreement outlines a range of collaborative initiatives, including police reform executive dialogues, engagement with key parliamentary committees, youth leadership training for Officers Commanding Stations (OCSs), Sub-County Youth Liaison Officers (SYLOs), and Training programmes for Sub-County Police Commanders. 

In his address, IG Kanja hailed the agreement as a strategic tool for institutional development and reform within the NPS. He commended UNDP and its Resident Representative for their unwavering support and strategic partnership, emphasizing the NPS’s commitment to transparency, timely implementation, and accountability in both financial and programmatic reporting. He also reaffirmed the Service’s focus on achieving measurable outcomes and tangible impact. UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Madelena Monoja, expressed her appreciation for the collaboration, stating her confidence that the training initiatives would significantly strengthen the relationship between the police and the Kenyan public. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to enhancing policing standards, deepening reform, and fostering public trust in Kenya’s law enforcement institutions. 

The signing ceremony was witnessed by several key stakeholders, including Chairperson, Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Mr. Ahmed Issack Hassan, Senior Governance Advisor, UNDP, Ms. Anki Dellnas, Executive Director, Independent Medico-Legal Unit, Ms. Wangechi Grace Kahuria, Head of Principal Prosecution Counsel, ODPP, Ms. Linda Mwamburi, Registrar, Office of the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Ms. Esther Nyaiyaki, and Advisor, CAJ Dr. Mary Kimari. IG Kanja was joined by the Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), Mr. Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General, Administration Police Service (DIG-APS), Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mr. Mohamed I. Amin, Principal Assistant to the IG, Mr. Mathew Kutoh, SAIG, Commandant, National Police Leadership Academy, Mr. Mathiu Kainga, AIG, and NPS Spokesperson, Mr. Muchiri Nyaga, AIG, among other senior police officers.
