ENHANCING POLICE OFFICERS’ WELLNESS: MENTAL HEALTH SENSITISATION SESSION CONDUCTED IN GARISSA COUNTY

Yesterday, 26th May 2025, a comprehensive mental health awareness lecture and psychological counselling session was held at Modogashe Police Station in Lagdera Sub-County, Garissa County. The session was facilitated by Counsellor Madam Zakia Rashid, alongside officials from the Regional Office of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC). The primary objective was to sensitize police officers to critical mental health issues and foster a culture of psychological wellness within the policing profession. Given the high-pressure nature of their work, mental health has become a key concern, necessitating proactive intervention. During the session, officers were guided through key topics, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), common indicators of stress, substance use and related disorders, various forms of depression and anxiety prevalent among law enforcement personnel
Facilitators explored the causes, risk factors, symptoms, and long-term effects of these conditions while providing effective coping strategies. They also stressed the importance of early diagnosis and professional support. A strong emphasis was placed on breaking the stigma surrounding mental health in uniformed services, encouraging officers to seek help without fear of judgement. The session also covered the role of peer support, self-care practices, and available mental health resources—both within the police service and through external support systems. NPSC officials reaffirmed their commitment to officers’ wellbeing, highlighting institutional support structures, such as regular wellness assessments and mental health support programmes. They urged continued participation in such initiatives, stressing that officers’ mental wellness is vital for operational efficiency, sound decision-making, and effective community engagement.
