CURTAINS DOWN ON ASTU INTERCOMPANIES ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

This evening, the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) successfully concluded the final day of the Intercompanies Athletics Championships, marking the end of a vibrant two-day sporting event. The championships brought together athletes from various ASTU companies, along with their families, fans, and staff members, for a spirited celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and talent. The event, hosted by ASTU Commandant Mr. Joseph Limo, SAIG, featured a wide array of athletic competitions, showcasing participants' physical prowess across multiple disciplines, including the 5km and 3km races, javelin, discus, 4x100m, and 4x400m relays, among others. One of the standout performers of the day was the indefatigable George Njenga from the Mounted Company, who dominated both the Men’s 100m and 200m sprints, earning the title of Best Overall Individual in track events. On the women’s side, ASTU Headquarters' Ruth Nyongesa and Betty Chelangat claimed victories in the 100m and 200m races, respectively. The crowd favourite and most anticipated event of the day was undoubtedly the men’s tug of war, which saw Mounted Company emerge victorious after a fierce showdown that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
The day would not have been complete without the traditional horse racing at the legendary Home of the Service’s Steeds. With Sergeant Irene leading the team, the event was a thrilling showcase of the exceptional equestrian skills for which the Unit is renowned. ASTU has produced some of Kenya’s finest athletes, including Wycliffe Kinyamal, Beatrice Chepkoech, and Maureen Thomas, among others. The Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, was represented at the event by APS Director of Logistics Mr. Kisyungu Wambua, SAIG. Delivering remarks on behalf of the DIG-APS, Mr. Wambua commended all athletes for their sterling performances across the day’s events. He noted that sport remains a vital part of the National Police Service (NPS), not only for physical fitness but also to promote teamwork. He further urged athletes to uphold integrity by training and competing fairly, steering clear of doping and other practices that could tarnish the reputation of the sport.

Mr. Wambua also thanked the event’s sponsors, whose support was instrumental to the athletes’ success, including Kenya National Police DT Sacco, Equity Bank, Absa Bank, Harambee Sacco, East Africa Futures Company, Premier Credit, among others. Also in attendance were the Chairperson of NPS Athletics, Mr. Stephen Etyang, SAIG, APS Director of Sports and Chaplaincy Coordinator, Mr. Ramadhan Omar, AIG, Deputy Director of the Paramilitary Academy, National Youth Service (NYS), Mr. George Kamau, among other senior officials.
