NPS ADVANCES GENDER-RESPONSIVE ARMS CONTROL IN SOUTH AFRICA

The National Police Service (NPS), through the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA), actively participated in a strategic meeting on gender mainstreaming in small arms control. The meeting was held this week in Johannesburg, South Africa. Officially opened by Major General Anna Sithole of the South African Police Service and supported by the European Union (EU), the meeting brought together regional and international partners committed to advancing gender-responsive peace and security.

During the session, Commissioner of Police Eunice A.J. Dobby, the Director of Finance & Administration and RECSA Gender Focal Point, represented the Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja. She delivered a presentation on how Member States can strengthen operational mechanisms for effective gender-responsive arms control. The discussions highlighted the need to integrate gender perspectives into arms control, promote women’s leadership, enhance youth involvement, and build stronger cooperation between regional and international bodies. This should be achieved by applying mentorship, training, and data-driven approaches to create safer communities.

The NPS's participation through RECSA reflects the Service’s strong commitment to the AU Silencing the Guns initiative, gender equality, and the creation of inclusive, peaceful societies across Africa.
