NPS HOLDS CONSULTATIVE MEETING WITH UN REPRESENTATIVES ON GENERAL ELECTION PREPAREDNESS
The National Police Service (NPS) today, 9th October 2025, held a consultative meeting with representatives from the United Nations (UN) at the NPS Headquarters in Nairobi. The meeting focused on assessing the Service’s level of preparedness for the forthcoming General Election. It was chaired by the Director of Reforms, Mr.John Kamau, AIG, who represented the Inspector General of Police, Mr.Douglas Kanja. The UN delegation was led by Mr.Akinyemi Adegbola, Head of the UN Electoral Needs Assessment Mission. In his remarks, Mr.Kamau acknowledged the continued partnership and support of the United Nations in strengthening democratic processes in Kenya, particularly in fostering peaceful and secure elections.
The National Police Service continues to play a critical role in safeguarding the electoral process through enhanced preparedness measures. These include specialized training for officers, strategic deployment planning, inter-agency coordination, and community engagement initiatives aimed at building public trust and confidence. The Service remains committed to upholding human rights, maintaining neutrality, and exercising professionalism in all its operations. Through these principles, the NPS strives to provide a secure environment that enables citizens to freely exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation.
Mr.Kamau further underscored the importance of collaboration between state and non-state actors in resource mobilization and capacity building for officers in preparation for the elections. He also reaffirmed the Service’s continued cooperation with oversight bodies such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to enhance accountability and transparency. He emphasized that stakeholder collaboration remains key to ensuring synergy, efficiency, and effectiveness in securing the electoral process. The National Police Service reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting free, fair, and peaceful elections during the forthcoming General Election, as well as the by-elections scheduled to take place next month in various parts of the country.
Among those present from the UN were the Deputy UNDP Representative to Kenya, Ms.Madelena Monoja; Ms.Sare Knoope, Electoral Assistance Specialist; Ms.Shewit Desta, from the Office of the Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa; Ms.Jane Serwanga, Programme Manager – Elections, UNDP; and Ms Prisca Kamungi, Peace and Development Officer, UN Resident Coordinator’s Office. The Director of Reforms was accompanied by Mr.Tom Odero, AIG, (KPS); Mr.Samson Kiptum, CP, (DCI);and Mr Bruce Nyonje, CP, (APS), among others.
