INTER-AGENCY ROAD SAFETY CONVERSATION CONFERENCE KICKS OFF IN MOMBASA

The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Mr. Davis Chirchir, yesterday (18th September 2025) officiated at the opening of a three-day Inter-Agency Road Safety Conversation Conference at the Pride Inn Paradise Hotel, Mombasa. The conference, themed "Inter-Agency Conversation and Dialogue for the Successful Implementation of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028", brings together Chief Executive Officers and senior national and county government officials from Kenya's road safety pillar institutions. This gathering recognizes the urgent and shared responsibility for reducing road fatalities and serious injuries.

The aims of the conference include:

  • Establishing and operationalizing the Multi-Agency Governance Framework (MAGF).
  • Facilitating and promoting a deliberate, highly visible national conversation on Kenya's road safety challenges to make it a national priority.
  • Deliberating on national road safety action priorities.
  • Discussing, adopting, and committing to the National Road Safety Action Implementation Plan. 
  • Discussing and adopting potential areas of collaboration between national and county governments to improve road safety. 
  • Identifying and discussing road safety funding and financing mechanisms to ensure sustainable road safety programmes at national and county levels.

The Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, was represented at the conference by the National Police Service traffic liaison officer, Dr. Mutungi Musyoki, AIG. During the plenary session, Dr. Musyoki highlighted several actions taken by the National Police Service to address the persistent carnage on the roads. These include the enhancement of traffic management; a review of systems by the EACC to root out corruption within the Service; the introduction of hotlines and anonymous reporting systems; and the acquisition of modern, digitised road safety equipment, such as the Trucam II speed gun, among other measures.

Present at the opening of the conference were the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua; the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Transport, Mr. Mohamed Daghar; Members of Parliament from the Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure; the Commandant of Traffic, Dr Fredrick Ochieng, AIG; the Coast Regional Police Commander, Mr. Ali Nuno, AIG; the Nairobi Regional Traffic Officer, Mr. Joseph Chirchir, CP; and other Regional Traffic Enforcement Officers.
