IG Kanja Tours Dabel Goldmines
Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja today December 11, 2024 toured Moyale, Marsabit County on a fact-finding mission following media reports that five people were killed on 10/12/2024 after a gold mine collapsed in Dabel area, with several others still trapped therein. The IG arrived in Moyale this morning aboard NPS aircraft piloted by Commandant NPS Airwing Mr. James Kabo, AIG. After holding discussions with the local elders and security agencies, it was established that there were no reports of deaths or missing persons made so far since yesterday. Notably, the Government's decision to close the Dabel goldmines remains in force. Currently, the multi-agency security team supported by National Youth Service is backfilling the mine holes. The IG also addressed members of the local community and reiterated the Government's commitment to safeguarding the safety and security of all citizens. He was accompanied by members of the security and intelligence committees from Eastern Region. The Regional Police Commander Eastern Region, Mr. Charles Naibei, AIG was also present.
