SOCIAL MEDIA ALLEGATIONS ON ASSAULT BY POLICE.

The attention of the National Police Service has been drawn to allegations doing rounds in the social media on alleged assault by police on members of the public in an estate within Nairobi.

LESOS SHOOTING INCIDENT

The Inspector General National Police Service has this afternoon 25th June, 2020 ordered the immediate arrest and suspension of the officer who was involved in a shooting incident in Lesos, Nandi East sub-county.

This follows a shooting incident that ensued after a bodaboda rider carrying two pillion passengers was arrested. Protesting bodaboda riders thereafter attacked the arresting officer and his colleagues and attempted to snatch a rifle as they escorted the arrested persons to Lesos Police Station, leading to the fatal shooting of Lazarus Kirop, a man aged 40 years.

Officers then withdrew back to the station but were followed by a riotus mob who caused damage to sections of the station and burnt down the house of the Officer Commanding Station (OCS).

Attempts to bar the irate crowd from further causing destruction to the station were in vain, leading to the fatal shooting of two more.

The National Police Service of Kenya reiterates its commitment to its highest ideal of service for all, ‘Utumishi Kwa Wote’ and holds the position that no officer is allowed to take the law into their own hands. We have informed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for action as stipulated in law.We commit to take stern disciplinary action against any other officer found culpable.

It is the considered view of the service that all officers must abide by the law even as they execute their duties and must uphold the National Police Service mission, for a professional and people-centered police service through community partnerships for a safer society.
