TRAUMA INFORMED POLICING INITIATIVE FOR THE NPS

The National Police Service will continue providing outreach initiatives to create awareness and sensitize police officers on stress and trauma management through psycho-education programs.

Director, Human Capital Development in the service Madam Rosemary Kuraru said police officers who are often exposed to stressful and traumatic situations that create deep emotional, psychological and even physical hurt require holistic trauma healing.

Madam Kuraru was speaking today during a validation workshop on Trauma Informed Policing Initiative at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.

She said, the Chaplaincy and Counselling Unit in the directorate, is committed to providing psycho social support to ensure the wellbeing of officers as they fulfil their mandate of providing security and safety.

The Director said, the validation of the Muamko Mpya-Healing the Uniform Initiative, is geared towards building on the wellness and psychological support of officers as envisaged   in the NPS Policy framework.

The ultimate goal of the initiative, she said, is to provide officers with knowledge, tools and framework to assist them support each other while addressing traumatic experiences they encounter at their personal and professional levels.

About 500 uniformed and non-uniformed  officers have so far  been trained on aspects of  stress and trauma awareness, identity, relationships, resilience, healing and transformation  under  the  Muamko Mpya- Healing the Uniform Initiative pilot program sponsored by  a non-governmental organizations known as  Green String Network,

She hailed the governments of the United States of America and United Kingdom for supporting the program that will go a long way in providing positive and healthy engagements with the members of the public to improve service delivery.

The validation exercise was also attended by the Director of Police Reforms, Assistant Inspector General Mr. Jaspher Nyauma among other senior police officers and stakeholders.
